Red Bulls Past, Present and Future

Some updates on Red Bulls past, present and future courtesy Brian Lewis' Extra Time blog in the New York Post:

  1. Red Bulls Past - Recently departed defender Diego Jimenez scored the only goal and helped keep a clean sheet in leading Tecos to a 1-0 Interliga win over Morelia. Good for Diego, tough for Red Bulls supporters. When wondering what will be missed more, his stalwart defense or new-found goal-scoring touch, we vote "both of the above."
  2. Red Bulls Present - More indications that big Dave van den Bergh will be back with the Red Bulls in 2009, plus even more good news on a possible extension for Juan Pablo Angel. Time to renew those season tickets, and pick up a replica jersey while you're at it!
  3. Red Bulls Future - Wunderkind Matt Kassel will spend at least one more year at the University of Maryland, yet still the Red Bulls retain his MLS rights. Considering the youngster is a holding midfielder - NYRB's most crowded position - the option to stay in school, defend the NCAA championship, train with the pros in the summer and get 25+ starts in the college season sounds like an ideal situation for all parties involved.

Big thanks to Mr. Lewis for so much good content on a January Monday. Well done, good sir!

Um, Didn't The Goalkeeper Score?

Goal.com has posted the 2008 Red Bulls Year in Review. A few glaring omissions:

  1. Dane Richards, injured in pre-season in Salzburg, missed the start of the season yet recovered and was the best field player in the playoff victory over the defending champion Houston Dynamo.

  2. Dave van den Bergh's goal 46 seconds into the season.

  3. Luke Sassano going from "not good enough to be worth a shot" to starting in the MLS Cup

But of course the biggest dis goes to ol' Danny Boy Cepero whose first-ever goal by a goalkeeper in an MLS match gets nary a mention.

Shame on you Zac Lee Rigg!

New Year's Dutch Treat

We understand MLS Rumors must be taken with a huge grain of salt, but the news that Dave van den Bergh is staying with the Red Bulls is so big it's hard not to get excited.

Big Dave was unquestionably the Red Bulls' MVP in 2008. Let's hope the rumors are true and we can look forward to a repeat performance in 2009!

Here We Go Again (2009 Edition)

We're going to give this blog another shot this year. Let's see where this takes us.

(Hey if the Phillies can win the World Series and the Red Bulls can make it to MLS Cup, I can surely update a blog 2-3 times per week, right?)
